On 17 February, the CMCS will present a public lecture by Associate Professor Petros Iosifidis, Reader in Media and Communications in the Department of Sociology, City University London.

The lecture will address one of the most challenging debates in contemporary media studies: the transition of the traditional Public Service Broadcasters (PSBs) into Public Service Media (PSM) or Public Service Communications (PSC). How will they widen their remit to be available in more delivery platforms for producing and distributing public service content?

Cross-platform strategies help PSM/PSC retain audience share, reach new audiences and develop on-demand services, while enabling them to create a stronger partnership with civil society and serve an extended form of citizenship. What steps need to be taken to enable PSBs to reflect social change and new technologies so as to evolve from basic broadcasting services into an engine that provides information and useful content to all citizens using various platforms?

Petros is the editor of a forthcoming book dealing with these questions, Reinventing Public Service Communication (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010), which includes contributions by 23 authors from Europe and elsewhere. He is also the author of Public Television in the Digital Era (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007) and co-author of European Television Industries (British Film Institute, 2005).

The public lecture will take place at 17:30 in the TIGY room (006) of the Central European University at Nador street 11, Budapest.
