Anya Schiffrin Co-authors UNESCO Report on Funding Journalism

May 5, 2022

A new UNESCO report on policy options for media viability, written by our Advisory Board Member Anya Schiffrin, Julie Posetti, Emily Bell and Francesca Edgerton, was released on World Press Freedom Day.

The document, entitled Finding the Funds for Journalism to Thrive, addresses the question of how policymakers can best respond to the severe financial crisis that threatens the supply of independent journalism. Building on the Windhoek+30 Declaration, “it provides a typology of global responses, assesses their pros and cons, and makes 22 actionable recommendations.”

The policy brief explains the crisis of media viability and calls for urgent action. It references a UNESCO report by CMDS Director Marius Dragomir on media capture.

The brief comes as part of the UNESCO series World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development
