New Book by CMDS Fellow Benedetta Brevini on AI and Climate Change

October 18, 2021

Is artificial intelligence good for the planet? This is the issue CMDS Fellow Benedetta Brevini discusses in her new book, published in Polity’s Digital Futures series.

In the book, Brevini describes the risks posed for the climate by an uncritical embracement of artificial intelligence, which is currently presented as a solution to the greatest challenges of our time. She argues that AI contributes to the climate crisis by running on technology that depletes scarce resources and by relying on data centers that demand excessive energy use.

Urging to bring climate change at the center of AI policy, Benedetta Brevini says, “We must understand and debate the environmental costs of AI.”
